Prescription weight loss medication

Compounded Tirzepatide

Tirzepatide is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. Compounded tirzepatide is a custom-prepared medication that an independent licensed provider may prescribe. It is not FDA-approved.

Not FDA-approved. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. The FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness, or quality. They are prepared by state-licensed pharmacies on a provider's prescription for an individual patient.

Formulation

Compounded semaglutide and compounded tirzepatide are offered as injectable medication prepared by VialsRx, a licensed U.S. pharmacy. Which medication and formulation you receive is decided by your provider, and is subject to clinical eligibility and current availability.

Compounded Tirzepatide vs. Compounded Semaglutide

How it differs from semaglutide

Semaglutide and tirzepatide are both compounded GLP-1 medications, but they aren't the same drug. Tirzepatide acts on two hormonal pathways, the GLP-1 and GIP receptors. Semaglutide acts on one, the GLP-1 receptor alone. That mechanical difference is what separates the two medications, not a difference in how they're prescribed, dosed, or shipped through Mazrek.

Who typically considers tirzepatide

Tirzepatide is often considered by people who have already tried a single-pathway GLP-1 medication and are looking at a dual-pathway option with their provider, or by people whose provider recommends starting with a dual-pathway approach based on their health history and goals. Whether tirzepatide, semaglutide, or neither is right for you is a clinical decision your provider makes after reviewing your health history, not something you choose off a menu.

This page is not a substitute for medical advice, and it doesn't claim one medication works better than the other. Individual response varies, and only your provider can decide which medication, if any, fits your health history and goals. See Compounded Semaglutide.

How eligibility and prescribing work

  • You complete a short online health intake. A licensed U.S. provider reviews it. Not everyone is prescribed treatment.
  • Mazrek is a technology platform. Prescribing decisions are made only by the independent licensed provider, never by Mazrek.
  • Your provider decides whether treatment is appropriate, which medication, and your dose and titration schedule.
  • You must be 18 or older.
  • If you are not a candidate, no prescription is issued.

Safety information

Boxed warning: thyroid C-cell tumors

  • In rodent studies, tirzepatide caused thyroid C-cell tumors. It is not known whether it does in humans, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC).
  • Do not use if you or a family member has had MTC, or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
  • Tell your provider right away about a lump or swelling in the neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath.

Common side effects

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Stomach pain
  • Indigestion and reflux

Serious risks to report immediately

  • Pancreatitis (severe, persistent abdominal pain, with or without vomiting)
  • Gallbladder problems, including gallstones
  • Dehydration and kidney problems, usually after vomiting or diarrhea
  • Serious allergic reactions (swelling of the face, lips or throat, trouble breathing)
  • Low blood sugar, especially if you also take insulin or sulfonylureas
  • Changes in vision, for people with diabetic retinopathy

Other things to know

  • It slows stomach emptying, which can affect how other oral medications are absorbed.

Who should not use it

  • People who are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
  • Anyone allergic to tirzepatide or any ingredient in the preparation
  • Anyone with a personal or family history of MTC or MEN 2
