Prescription weight loss medication

Compounded Semaglutide

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Compounded semaglutide is a custom-prepared medication that an independent licensed provider may prescribe. It is not FDA-approved.

Not FDA-approved. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. The FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness, or quality. They are prepared by state-licensed pharmacies on a provider's prescription for an individual patient.

Formulation

Compounded semaglutide and compounded tirzepatide are offered as injectable medication prepared by VialsRx, a licensed U.S. pharmacy. Which medication and formulation you receive is decided by your provider, and is subject to clinical eligibility and current availability.

Compounded Semaglutide vs. Compounded Tirzepatide

How it differs from tirzepatide

Semaglutide and tirzepatide are both compounded GLP-1 medications, but they aren't the same drug. Semaglutide acts on a single hormonal pathway, the GLP-1 receptor. Tirzepatide acts on two, the GLP-1 and GIP receptors. That mechanical difference is what separates the two medications, not a difference in how they're prescribed, dosed, or shipped through Mazrek.

Who typically considers semaglutide

Semaglutide is often the first GLP-1 medication a provider considers for someone starting treatment, since it has a longer track record as a single-pathway option. It's also a common choice for people who want to start with a more established mechanism, or whose provider prefers to titrate a single-pathway medication first before considering an alternative. Whether semaglutide, tirzepatide, or neither is right for you is a clinical decision your provider makes after reviewing your health history, not something you choose off a menu.

This page is not a substitute for medical advice, and it doesn't claim one medication works better than the other. Individual response varies, and only your provider can decide which medication, if any, fits your health history and goals. See Compounded Tirzepatide.

  • Mazrek is a technology platform. Prescribing decisions are made only by the independent licensed provider, never by Mazrek.
  • Your provider decides whether treatment is appropriate, which medication, and your dose and titration schedule.
  • You must be 18 or older.
  • If you are not a candidate, no prescription is issued.
